Angry Black Gxrl Art
where anger becomes passion
I’m DeJanae (like déjà-vu) and I’m an RVA native who spent her college years living in San Diego, CA. During that time, I faced hardships which forced me to stand up for myself and what I believe in. The campus culture was not necessarily welcoming to a Black girl with bold opinions. I was constantly labeled “angry” or a “problem starter” for pointing out systemic flaws in my college community. In summer 2020, years after being kicked out of the Greek organization whose chapter house I was living in, I decided to turn this nasty micro aggression into something meaningful. I decided that if I was going to be called angry anyway, I wanted my anger to mean something—and by August 2020, this Black girl had a lot to be mad about. Now, in 2022, Angry Black Gxrl Art is a creative paradox which illustrates what happens when anger becomes passion.
